“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” While this quote by Pablo Picasso is very popular, I think many people only focus on the last half…the part about breaking the rules. Here’s the thing; if you don’t know the rules you’re not really breaking them creatively!
It might be useful then to start by generating a list of some of the rules that apply to your artistic discipline. How well do you know the rules of colour, composition, sentence structure, proportion, elements and principles of design, and so on. By generating this list it might also point you in the direction of some areas that you might want to study further. By learning the rules not only will it likely improve your work dramatically in the short term, it will ultimately lead you to the innovations that you can make when you start to improvise, innovate and cross-fertilize. And just think of all the fun you’ll be having!
What rules are you going to learn and break?
On another note, the summer months of July and August will have only the mid month post – regular programming will resume in September.
Also, don’t forget that I will be on my first webinar on Saturday morning at 10:00am PST. I will be answering questions relating to my online course Encaustic 101: The Wonderful World of Wax, but the material covered will be of interest to all artists. The link for the webinar is https://youtu.be/4MbXucJea6g – I hope to see everyone there.
