I think that mastery is one of the most powerful ideas to explore as we think about our creativity and I think the mastery that Leonardo is talking about here is discipline. “Mastery of oneself” is what takes us into the studio when we would rather sit on the couch and watch TV. It is the tenacity to carry on when the tune isn’t coming together, when we can’t figure out the last sentence, and when the colours are all wrong – yet again! It is the will power to send out your latest piece of work to be considered for the exhibition, production or performance despite your feelings of doubt.
Mastery of oneself is the foundation of both our life success and our creative success and it is reflected in our daily rituals and habits. Perhaps now would be a good time to start thinking about how we can best support our creativity and artistic aspirations by creating some powerful new habits of self mastery today.
What new habit would help you the most in moving forward with your creative endeavours?
